Institution Access
A Levey-Jennings record’s institution identity is defined upon record generation according to the following rules:
- If results are associated with the Levey-Jennings record, the institution(s) of the device(s) from the result set is captured.
- If no results are associated with the Levey-Jennings record, the institution(s) of the device(s) selected as part of the criteria is captured.
- If the above criteria is not met, the home institution of the user generating the record is captured.
A Levey-Jennings record’s institution identity is a snapshot from when the record is generated and is fixed once a Levey-Jennings is reviewed.
Adding and Generating
Levey-Jennings records can be manually added to the RALS™ SYSTEM. Levey-Jennings records can be generated based on the selected criteria. A generated Levey-Jennings record with associated results contains at minimum one chart, one table of result values, and one table of statistics. See Result Reviews for more information on reviewing result values.
The system attempts to generate a chart for every combination of selected chart criteria and includes a graph displaying the respective result value data points, chart statistics, and a result values data table. If multiple QC levels are generated, then the charts are broken into different level tabs. If no data is available for a chart criterion (e.g. device(s), control(s), reagent(s), parameter(s)), or no result exists for a specific parameter based on the chart date range, then no data will be charted for that item.

Criteria
Selecting Levey-Jennings criteria allows you to choose what is charted. Criteria become read-only once a Levey-Jennings chart has been saved or reviewed. The following criteria can be selected when generating a Levey-Jennings record:
Criteria Name | Description |
---|---|
Date Range | Includes the start and end dates from which chart data (results, ranges, devices, etc.) are pulled; displayed as entered by the user regardless of whether multiple time zone support is enabled |
Time Zone | The time zone applied to the date range when querying for chart data |
Device Type | Device Type for which you are generating charts |
Devices | Results are charted from the selected device(s); if none selected, the results from all devices are charted for a given Device Type |
Control(s) | Control(s) for which you are generating charts |
Reagent(s) | Reagent(s) for which you are generating charts |
Control Levels | Control levels specified during record generation |
Parameters | Select one or more parameters (aka analytes) to be charted; if none selected, then all parameters are charted |
Ranges
Chart ranges are stored on either the reagent, the control, or on the result itself, based on the device type. Depending on where the ranges are stored, and if they’re supplied, will determine what ranges are used for generating a Levey-Jennings chart. When no ranges are available, no data is charted.
Levey-Jennings supports historic ranges. The chart will start with the most recent ranges for the material from the result value which predate the start time of the chart. If a material range change occur during the period covered by the chart, the range plot changes to the new range from that point forward to the next range change or the end of the chart, whichever comes first.
Lines
When viewing a Levey-Jennings chart, the following values will be reflected using horizontal lines on the graph:
- Mean (the target value) is represented by a solid line
- High and low values of the target range are represented by dashed lines
- Additional set of dashed lines display at range points plus half the difference between mean and range points
- Graph’s outer boundaries display at range points plus the difference between mean and range points
If multiple time zone support is enabled, the x-axis and tooltips are displayed relative to your time zone preference.
Legend
A chart legend is shown under the criteria after a chart has been generated, saved, or reviewed.
The legend contains the following icons that can match to result value data points on a graph:
Icon | Description | Notes |
---|---|---|
In Range | Indicates values that are within the expected ranges | |
Excluded | Indicates results values that are not included in statistics; automatic or manual exclusion is denoted in the tooltip | |
Out of Range | Indicates values that are outside of the target range but within the chart’s boundary | |
Out of Graph Range | Indicates values that are outside of the chart’s boundary |
Each legend item has a toggle which defaults to enabled. To hide result value data points on the graph, disable the toggle associated with the result value data points.
Statistics
Field Name | Description | Notes |
---|---|---|
Total Results | Count of all charted results (included and excluded) | |
Excluded Results | Count of currently charted results excluded from the statistics | |
Included Outliers | Count of currently charted results outside the target range that have not been excluded from statistics | |
Mean | The mean derived from the currently included results | Precision of the parameter +1 decimal |
Minimum | Shows the lowest value of the currently included results | |
Maximum | Shows the highest value of the currently included results | |
Sample Standard Deviation | Shows the standard deviation of the entire sample of currently included results | Precision of the parameter +1 decimal |
Coefficient of Variation (%CV) | The Coefficient of Variation of the currently included result values | Precision of the parameter +1 decimal |
Result Values
The result values associated with a chart are displayed with the following information:
Field Name | Notes |
---|---|
Result Time | Result date/time associated with result; if multiple time zone support is enabled, this is displayed relative to your time zone preference |
Value | Result value and unit of measure for parameter |
Flag | Flag associated with the result value, if applicable |
Device | Specific device associated with result |
Control | Control material associated with result |
Reagent | Reagent material associated with result, if applicable |
Operator | Operator associated with result |
Location | The RALS™ SYSTEM location associated with result |
Comments | Comment(s) associated with result, if applicable |
Review Note | The last review note associated with the result, if applicable |
If multiple time zone support is enabled, the set of results on the chart is determined by the time zone selected at chart generation, not your time zone preference. Changing your time zone preference will change the dates and times displayed on the chart but does not change the set of results on the chart.
See Result Reviews for information on reviewing result values.
Editing
Levey-Jennings records are automatically saved when generated and can be directly edited until they are reviewed. Reviewed records cannot be edited.
Levey-Jennings records can be bulk edited, and groups of Levey-Jennings records can be reviewed together. When reviewing a group of records, individual records may be removed from the group if desired. After all levels on all records have been viewed, the entire group can be marked as reviewed. See Levey-Jennings Reviews for more information on reviewing Levey-Jennings records.
Bulk editing is not available in Internet Explorer.
Cloning
All Levey-Jennings records can be cloned. All values will be copied, except:
Field | Notes |
---|---|
Date Range | You will be prompted to enter a new one |
Time Zone | Time zone applied to the date range specified during record generation; only displayed if multiple time zone support is enabled |
Reviews | Associated reviews are not copied |
Deactivating or Deleting
Levey-Jennings records that have not been reviewed can be deleted. Deleted records cannot be restored.
Printing
Levey-Jennings records can be printed. If the result values are expanded on the page, then the result values are printed according to the applied value range filters (if any): In Range, Excluded, Out of Range, Out of Graph Range, Device Tasks
Note: You can only change these filter settings on unreviewed charts.
If the result values are not expanded on the page, then the result values are not printed.
Levey-Jennings Actions
The following actions are available for Levey-Jennings records:
Review
See Levey-Jennings Reviews for more information on reviewing Levey-Jennings records.
Delete Reviews
The delete reviews action allows you to delete all reviews at once for a given Levey-Jennings record. A special permission is required. Once the reviews associated with the record have been deleted, the record itself can be deleted.
Result Review
One or more results can be reviewed from a Levey-Jennings record. A result can be reviewed multiple times. While reviewing results on a Levey-Jennings record, the values can be excluced from statistics and charts.
The initial state of the selected result values to be reviewed (i.e., included, automatically excluded, manually excluded, mixed states) will determine the default state of the exclude checkbox on the review dialog and will affect whether or not the state of a selected value can be changed.
See Result Reviews for more information on reviewing results.
Tasks
The RALS™ SYSTEM provides the ability to manage Levey-Jennings tasks. For more information on tasks, see the following sections:
